Lawmakers spend Rp 12b on foreign travels during recess
What do lawmakers do during their recess period? Travel abroad, apparently, for which Rp 12 billion (US$1.38 million) has been allotted, according to the Indonesian Forum for Budget Transparency (Fitra).
FITRA investigation and coordination coordinator Uchok Sky Khadafi said members of at least four House of Representatives units had been slated to travel during the one-month recess, including those of Commission I overseeing defense and foreign affairs, who would visit five different countries.
Rp 5.7 billion was slated for Commission I members to travel to France and Spain on Apr. 14-20, to Turkey and Russian on Apr. 16-22, and to the US in early May.
“Members of other commissions will travel abroad, too, such as those of Commission VIII, Commission X and the House’s domestic bureau. The four House divisions will have 11 foreign visits to eight countries in the coming month," he said in a press statement sent to The Jakarta Post on Saturday.
Uchok added that members of Commission X overseeing education and tourism were slated to visit Spain on Apr. 24-30, costing Rp 1.32 billion.
Then there is the Rp 669 million allotted for members of Commission VIII overseeing religious affairs and social services to travel to China on Apr. 17-24, and Rp 1.57 billion for the members of domestic bureau to travel to Britain on May 1-7.
Other House members are also slated to travel to Turkey, Russia, France and Australia.
“In a month, House members of different commissions will go to the same two countries, which indicates that their foreign travels are not intended for comparative studies,” Uchok said.
